Tomb Sweeping Day – April 4, 2016

Tomorrow is what is known as Tomb Sweeping Day Festival, Qing Meng Festival. On this day families from near and far visit the tombs of their ancestors. If you Google Qing Meng Festival, you may enjoy reading about the history of the festival, and how/why it is celebrated. It is a very touching and inspiring story.

Many temples and monasteries schedule a yearly Qing Ming Ceremony.

The THE FILIAL PIETY SUTRA may be recited within your daily prayer offerings tomorrow, if you feel so inclined. Reciting this Sutra brings blessing to our departed ancestors, it also benefits oneself – generating positive karmic merit. You also may feel inclined to integrate this day within your yearly schedule.

Here at Flower Dance Temple we are celebrating the day with flowers, lights, incense, food, and a fire offering to honor our ancestors, inclusive of Old Master Ren Jun (1919 – 2011) who was/is a true spiritual ‘parent’.

Old Master Ren Jun’s (Jen Chun) Spring Poem

We welcome the New Year and its brightness with the Spring Festival,

Permeated by great sounds of cheer.

With blessings and laughter,

We drink and eat and enjoy ourselves.

Humans with great hearts look at a world that is desolate and depressed.

They are careworn with worry.

They renounce comfort and pleasure and steel body and mind to the task.

They reject shallow solutions and cultivate true peace.

Others idle their lives away, not knowing how to control themselves.

They are buried by their blessings and end up in misery.

Such stories are repeated endlessly throughout history and

Fill us with dread and frighten us to the core.

We come into this world with the call to become extraordinary and courageous warriors,

And when we leave, we have accomplished this ultimate goal.

Our bodies and minds are stirred to act with fervor and commitment.

We dedicate ourselves to this task, dropping any sense of a giver or something given.

Bright spring pervades everywhere, inspiring the spring wind.

With great energy, spring blossoms into a smile

That spreads across ten thousand flowers—

Spring bursts forth in the countenance of the Bodhisattva.

“With high spirits, welcome the glorious morning sun.

With the light shining through the dark shadows, our eyes open wide and see clearly.”

“The Buddha, Offspring of the Sun, awakened and transcended the world.”

May this be of benefit to all sentient beings!
